Why is Self-care So Important?
Self-care and what it is
A lot of people are advocates for self-care. I never realized it but there are so many ways to do self-care. Many say they don't have time or know what to do. But honestly, so many small things in people's lives are self-care and they aren't aware of it. I wasn't aware that I did self-care because sometimes it just feels routine. But anytime you're consciously thinking about yourself and putting time into your self whether that's health, looks, personality, school, or athletics, it is self-care. I had a meeting with one of my coaches and she had asked me if I put time aside for myself. At that moment I didn't think that I did. I felt busy and overwhelmed with school just starting and then lacrosse. I thought to myself for a moment after she asked me this question. I replied back to her that I wash my face and have a little skin routine that I do. I never realized that this part of my routine was self-care. I felt like I just did my skin routine because my skin needed it, or I needed to do it. There are so many mini-tasks that are hidden in self-care.
Self-love and Self-care
Now looking back on my routine for the day, I actually put a lot of time into myself and then I actively try to see if what I'm doing in a certain moment is self-care or self-love. When I wake up at 5:15 I get out of bed and do my routine hygiene like brushing my teeth and hair. Then I put on some shorts and a T-shirt with a hoodie and sweats on top. I throw my hair up into a ponytail, make sure it looks good, grab my bag, and go. I go to these lifts for lacrosse from 6-7. Now these lifts are not mandatory, I am getting myself there because I want to get stronger and be with my team. Afterward, I'll go back to my dorm, and shower. When I shower, it is usually a very lengthy process. I really like to take my time here and make sure that I feel refreshed when I'm done. I get changed and ready for the day. Then I'll go get breakfast with one of my friends because food fuels the body. Which is something that I like to remind myself often. Sometimes I feel like I "eat too much" or "don't eat clean enough" when in reality, I am an athlete. I am a human. We need to eat. So, if you ever think to yourself that you eat too much, try thinking it positively, and trust me, you'll feel so much more confident feeding yourself the nutrients your body needs for the day.
Another thing that I think is super important is getting outside. Leave your room. Go on a walk. Go do homework outside. Being away from the space that I sleep in to better myself or be productive is super effective. There are fewer distractions like my bed and also being in a different place makes me want to be productive and get my work done, so I'll focus and finish some homework. Also, just walking to class, especially when it's sunny, I like to really take in the sun and take a deep breath. I'll do this knowing that I'm going to be inside a most likely dark room with no windows for the next two to three hours. For me, being able to consciously think about taking in the sun and all the good properties it has makes me feel better. I get my little happy dose of the sun and then head into class ready to learn.
